Within Me- A Poem By Maya Ventour

Within Me

By Maya Ventour @mayaventour

The sun lives in my skin

Yet within me is an oppressor

The thought of who I am is a segment, restricted

Two end points and the awful in-between

The struggle I’ve had

It isn’t enough

I’ll never go through

What you’ve gone through

The privilege I carry

I’ve never experienced

It is apparent, although

I’m too dark

Yearning for acceptance on both ends of my segment of identity

Am I really a point in the middle if it comes easy to invalidate my experiences as a black girl

Am I really a point in the middle if it comes easy to seek validation from my white peers

I’m possibly the segment itself, points of my understanding
